On December 3, 2017, Maternity and Parental Benefits provided under the Employment Insurance Act and the Maternity and Parental Leave provisions of the Canada Labour Code were amended to, among other things, give eligible employees the option to receive parental benefits, and take a parental leave, for an additional six months. This Advisory explains the application of the new EI Maternity and Parental Benefit rules, which apply to residents of all provinces other than Quebec, and the application of new Maternity and Parental Leave rules, which only apply to employees engaged in federally regulated works and undertakings.

This Advisory will be of interest to employers, and administrators and sponsors of pension and benefit plans.
